Declined payments

A decline is a customer who was told no by their bank, not by you.

A customer buying a suitcase for a trip on Friday hits a daily limit and the card is declined. Most stores lose the order there. The Payments Suite treats the decline as a checkout to recover: the customer is offered another way to pay on the spot, and if they leave, a resume link follows by email or SMS while the trip is still on their mind.

Why it matters

What changes for the business.

Declines stop being write-offs

A share of declined checkouts complete on a second card, a wallet or a resumed session. That is revenue from customers who had already decided to buy.

No embarrassment at the checkout

The customer sees a calm offer of another way to pay, not a red error. They stay on the page instead of leaving to phone the bank.

Follow-up while it matters

If they do leave, Recover Checkout sends the resume link in your own template within minutes, not in next week's newsletter.

Runs alongside your processor

Nothing changes about your Opayo setup. The recovery path sits beside it and only appears when a payment fails.

How it works

Step by step, from the first switch-on.

  1. 1

    The payment fails

An issuer decline, a 3DS failure or an expired session is recorded against the checkout, not lost with the page.

  2. 2

    Offer another way, right there

The checkout offers a wallet or another card without reloading, with the address and basket intact.

  3. 3

    Follow the customer who leaves

If the tab closes, the Recover Checkout resume link goes out by email or SMS in your Magento template, landing back in a populated cart.

  4. 4

    Count what came back

Recovered declines are reported in the suite's dashboard next to recovered abandonments, so you can see what the feature is worth.

Ways merchants use it

One brand, one Friday.

Higher basket values, travel-linked purchases, B2B buyers on corporate cards with limits, and any store with a visible decline rate.

The limit

A four-hundred-pound case on a card that had already paid for the flights. The decline is caught, the wallet is offered, and the order completes.

The one who left

A customer closed the tab after the decline. The resume link found him at lunch, and the second card went through on the resumed cart.

The report

At month-end, recovered declines sit in the dashboard next to recovered carts. It is a number the finance director now asks for.

Questions

What merchants ask before they turn it on.

Does this replace my gateway?

No. It runs alongside your existing processor and only appears when a payment fails.

Is the customer charged twice?

No. The original attempt failed; the recovery completes one payment, and a resumed session expires once an order exists.

What can the customer do after a decline?

Pay with a wallet or another card on the spot, or come back later through the resume link.

Does it work with Hyvä Checkout?

Yes. The Hyvä build of the suite includes the same recovery behaviour.

Can I see what it recovered?

Yes. Recovered declines are counted in the suite's dashboard alongside recovered abandonments.

Turn it on, or ask us first.

The payments team will tell you plainly what switching this on involves for your store, and what it costs.
