Tax & reporting

Tax the way Magento says, reports the way finance wants.

A watch boutique sells to visitors from abroad. The till applies the store's Magento tax rules line by line, prints a tax-free receipt for the customer with the passport, and at the end of the day the sales report is split by user, tender and product, with tax in or out, ready for the accountant.

Why it matters

What changes for the business.

One set of tax rules

The till uses Magento's tax rules, including row-based tax and tax after discount, so the store and the website never disagree with each other or with the accountant.

Online tax where you need it

Avalara-style online tax totals, TaxJar and eTax for jurisdictions where the rate depends on more than a table.

Exemptions and tax-free shopping

Tax exemption at the cart with PIN protection, and GB Tax Free receipts for eligible visitors, from the same till.

Reports in the app and in Magento

Sales by date, user, payment type and product on the device, a POS reports module in the Magento admin, and accounting sync to Sage.

How it works

Step by step, from the first switch-on.

  1. 1

    Rules come from Magento

Tax rules, rates and classes sync to the device, with per-line rounding and apply-tax-after-discount honoured, and large rate tables filtered to what the store needs.

  2. 2

    Online tax when configured

Where an online tax service is set up, the till fetches totals live at checkout, and falls back sensibly when offline.

  3. 3

    Exempt or tax-free when allowed

A cashier with permission removes tax at checkout, or prints a GB Tax Free receipt for a visitor; sensitive actions can require a manager's PIN.

  4. 4

    Report and reconcile

In-app reports filter by store, currency, user, tender, date and type, including or excluding tax. The Magento reports module and Sage accounting sync take it from there.

Ways merchants use it

One boutique, one visitor, one month-end.

Retailers with several tax jurisdictions, tax-free shopping for visitors, or an accountant who wants the till and the website to agree.

The associate handing a tax-free receipt to the visiting customer

The visitor

A customer from overseas buys a watch. The tax-free receipt prints with the sale and the passport details are noted; the order in Magento carries the same tax breakdown.

The same associate with a manager approving an action on the till

The exemption

A trade buyer with an exemption certificate. The manager approves the tax removal with a PIN and the reason is recorded on the order.

The same associate reviewing printed reports at the boutique counter after closing

Month-end

Sales by tender and by associate, tax in and tax out, printed from the till and posted to Sage. The accountant has nothing to ask for.
