Direct-to-consumer

The checkout that finishes with a thumb, and the cart that comes back on its own.

Brands selling direct live on mobile conversion and repeat purchase. Apple Pay and Google Pay turn the card form into a double-click, a stalled checkout gets a resume link within minutes, customers arrive in Mailchimp scored and segmented, and the pop-up or the design fair takes paid orders for delivery from the same catalogue as the website.

What you run into

The problems this kind of business actually has.

Phones that abandon at the card form

Most traffic is mobile and most of it dies at the point where it has to type a card number.

Carts that stall and stay stalled

The product was chosen and the address entered, and the follow-up goes out in next week's newsletter, if at all.

One list for everyone

The sixth-time buyer gets the welcome discount and the lapsed customer gets nothing.

Pop-ups that collect business cards

The fair takes names on a clipboard and the orders never happen.

In practice

Three moments from a working week.

A businesswoman on a train paying on her phone

The commuter

She saw the product at lunch, opened it again on the train and has one bar of signal. Apple Pay finishes the order before the tunnel.

A marketer at a pet-nutrition brand with segment circles on a whiteboard

The whiteboard

First-timers, regulars, lapsed. Each maps to segments the extension maintains from orders, and each gets its own journey.

A brand's stand at a design trade fair

Day one at the fair

Show pricing on, the catalogue on three iPads, and the first order for delivery taken before the hall has filled up.

Questions

What merchants in this sector ask first.

Do wallets need a new extension?

No. Apple Pay and Google Pay are part of the Payments Suite. Update to the current release, switch them on from the Magento admin, and the setup flow creates the free payments account they run on.

Which cart recovery do we use, the suite's or Mailchimp's?

Both have a place. Recover Checkout handles a checkout that stalled at payment with a resume link in your Magento template. Mailchimp's abandoned cart journey works on carts synced by the Marketing Automation extension, with your Mailchimp templates and timing.

How are segments kept current?

The extension scores every customer from Magento orders nightly, writes the segment and order merge fields to the contact, and adds category tags as orders sync.

Can a pop-up take real orders?

Yes. The stand runs the same catalogue as the website with show pricing as a Magento cart price rule, takes payment on a reader or by link, and orders ship from the warehouse queue.
